How to choose a water filter in Australia

A decision guide that starts with your water and your home, not with products. Which filter type fixes which problem, what the certifications mean, what it costs to run, and the plumbing rules.
Filters are sold by product type. Water problems do not come that way. This guide works from the problem back to the product.
Step 1: identify the problem

Step 2: decide what you can install
Renting, or nothing permanent: jug, on-tap unit, benchtop gravity filter or countertop reverse osmosis. None connects to the mains.
Own the home: under-sink filter or under-sink RO, installed by a licensed plumber using WaterMark-certified products. Whole-house filtration if the problem is house-wide (tank water, sediment, chlorine in every shower).
Step 3: check the certification, not the marketing
- NSF/ANSI 42: chlorine, taste, odour (aesthetic).
- NSF/ANSI 53: lead, cysts, VOCs and other health contaminants, each listed and tested.
- NSF/ANSI 58: reverse osmosis systems.
- NSF/ANSI 372: lead-free materials.
- WaterMark: Australian plumbing certification required for anything connected to the water supply.
“Removes 99% of contaminants” with no certification is a claim, not a result.
Step 4: price the running cost

Over three years the cartridges usually cost more than the filter. Standard 10 inch housings that take generic cartridges are the cheapest to run.
Step 5: buy the boring one
The filter that gets used is the one that is easy to maintain. A jug that never gets its cartridge changed is worse than no filter, because a saturated carbon cartridge can shed what it has collected. Pick the type you will actually service, put the change date in your calendar, and buy the cartridges at the same time as the unit.
