On-tap filters are the most under-rated category in Australia. For the price of a jug you get a carbon filter that lives on the spout, filters on demand at a useful flow, and needs a new cartridge two or three times a year instead of every month.
How they fit
The unit screws onto the spout in place of the aerator, using one of several thread adapters in the box. A lever switches between filtered water and a normal unfiltered stream for washing up. The catch is fitment: pull-out mixers, square spouts and designer taps with hidden aerators usually cannot take one. Unscrew your aerator and look for a standard thread before you buy.
What they remove
The same as a jug: chlorine, taste, odour and, depending on the cartridge, some metals. Philips rates the X-Guard cartridge as three-stage micro filtration; treat the fine-filtration claim as a taste and sediment benefit rather than a health one unless you see certification.
The picks
The Philips On-Tap X-Guard is the one to buy: cheap, in every Bunnings, and a 1,000 litre cartridge that a couple will take four or five months to use. The Stefani chrome digital adds a cartridge counter and a finish that suits a nicer tap, but it is a lot more money for the same filtration.

Will an on-tap filter fit my tap?
They fit standard round spouts with a removable aerator, using the adapters in the box. They will not fit most pull-out mixers, square spouts or taps with integrated aerators. Unscrew your aerator and check for a thread before buying.
Do on-tap filters reduce water pressure?
Flow is slower in filtered mode, which is why they have a bypass lever for washing up. In bypass mode the flow is normal.
Are on-tap filters better than a jug?
For running cost, yes: one $40 to $60 cartridge does what ten jug cartridges do. For filtration they are similar, both being carbon based. Neither removes fluoride.
